Commander for Advocates · sample case · no sign-up

The real case board, on a sample veteran.

This is the console's own case page, not a mock-up: the same board, decoded decision and file list you get after you sign up, on the same synthetic Army veteran every new workspace starts with. A rating decision with one denial and a Board denial with its Court window open. Read-only: nothing you click here is sent or saved.

  • Every name and record is invented

Commander for Advocates · sample case · read-only

Sample This is a sample veteran, not a real person.

Every record, letter and card here is invented to show how a case works: records read, letters decoded, claim cards with readiness, the body diagram and a Board decision with its Court deadline. Anything that would reach VA, the veteran or a signer is turned off: Submit to VA, signature requests, emails and portal links, uploads and filing exports.

Found in the records, never claimed

1 to decide

A diagnosis is in this veteran’s records, it is not on any claim, and VA has never decided it. Each would be a new claim — no fee before VA’s initial decision (§ 14.636(c)).

  • Chronic sinusitisICD-10 J32.9

    • Diagnosed in the records — 2024-05-05, as the records state it
    • Not on any claim, and no VA decision on it
    • In the record: Four to five sinus infections a year since Iraq; CT mucosal thickening. Burn pit exposure at Balad.

The conditions

1 of 2 fee-bearing ready · 1 never claimed to decide
  • DC 6847ICD-10 G47.33Court appeal (CAVC)

Needs: The Board's error is identified

Court appeal (CAVC) due Feb 21, 2027 — 111 days left

Notice of Appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims within 120 days of the decision's MAILING date — confirm it on the envelope. A supplemental claim with new and relevant evidence stays open until 2027-10-24. Higher-Level Review and a second Board appeal are not available after a Board decision.

Set the fee basis to see what this review is worth.

  • DC 6100ICD-10 H90.3Supplemental

Appeal window closes Jul 18, 2027 — 258 days left

All three lanes are open, and a win still backdates to the original claim.

This veteran, on the body

Where every claim on this case sits, and what the records hold that was never claimed. Each colour is a status already in the record — not a prediction.

  • 1 ready to file
  • 1 being worked
  • 3 granted
  • 1 in the records, never claimed

Every claim

  • Bilateral hearing loss — ready to file · Supplemental · appeal window 258 days
  • Obstructive sleep apnea — being worked · Court appeal (CAVC) · appeal window 111 days
  • Tinnitus — granted at 10%
  • Lumbosacral strain — granted at 10%
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder — granted at 50%
  • Chronic sinusitis — documented in the records, never claimed — worth a look

The order of march

6 queued
  1. Get the VA Form 21-22a signed — for work before VA

At the Court you appear by a notice of appearance (Rule 46), filed no later than your first filing there — the 21-22a is not needed for the Notice of Appeal. It is what lets you act before VA on this case: a supplemental claim, or development on a remanded issue.

  2. File an intent to file

One VA Form 21-0966 for compensation holds today's date for everything below it can cover: the 1 new claim. It spans the fee-bearing and pro bono work alike. Without it, back pay runs from whenever each claim finally lands rather than from today. File it now, then build.

  3. Identify the error in the decision — Obstructive sleep apnea

A higher-level review turns on naming what the rater got wrong on the evidence they already had. No new evidence is allowed in this lane.

  4. Request the veteran's statement — Chronic sinusitis

The veteran's own account of how this affects work, home and daily life. They write and sign it — you can request it, never author it.

  5. Answer 1 denied contention

The decode says why each one was denied and which lane wins it back — a supplemental for missing evidence, a higher-level review for a decision made wrongly on the evidence they had. These are also the contentions a fee can be calculated from, since § 14.636 pays out of past-due on what you win back.

  6. Assemble the submission packet

One PDF with a cover sheet listing every enclosure, documents behind it in filing order, argument first. It is what a rater actually reads.
