How a congressional inquiry helps

Every member of Congress runs a constituent-services office whose job is to help people in their district navigate federal agencies — including the Department of Veterans Affairs. When your representative's office contacts the VA about your claim, it routes to a dedicated congressional liaison, which often surfaces a status update or unsticks a claim that has been sitting too long.

This is a legitimate, well-established process — not a special favor and not a way to influence the decision on your claim. The office asks the VA for a status update and, where appropriate, requests expedited handling for hardship or health reasons. The VA still adjudicates the claim on its merits.

Your letter authorizes the office to access your VA records on your behalf under the Privacy Act of 1974. Most congressional offices also ask you to sign their own short privacy-release form — you can find it on your representative's website or request it from their office.
